CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University ran its winning streak to seven straight with a 3-2 victory over Austin Peay on Friday at Dave Aaron Arena in Clarksville, Tennessee.
EKU (17-7, 8-3 ASUN) beat the Governors for the fifth straight time. The Colonels won by scores of 25-19, 25-16, 19-25, 20-25 and 17-15.
Sarah Mitchell led all players with 18 kills, to go along with 20 digs, three aces and two blocks.
Emilee Hill posted her fifth triple-double of the season, contributing 11 kills, 31 assists and 17 digs to go along with five aces and three blocks.
An attack error by the Colonels gave Austin Peay a 16-15 lead in the first set, but it was all EKU from that point. Four straight, capped by a block from Mitchell, put the visitors ahead 19-16.
Carson Ledford's kill made it 21-17. Mitchell finished off the opener, 25-19, with a kill.
EKU scored the first six points in the second set and went on top 9-1 on an ace from Mitchell. The Governors were within three, 14-11 on a kill from Gabriella MacKenzie, but the Colonels three straight to put it out of reach. Mitchell's kill made it 17-11. An APSU attack error handed EKU a 21-14 advantage.
Madi Tolzman's kill ended the set, 25-16, and gave her squad a 2-0 lead.
Austin Peay jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set. The Governors went up by 10, 18-8, on an attack error. EKU scored six unanswered to try and get back into the set, cutting it to four at 18-14 on a kill from Ledford and a APSU attack error. Anna Rita's kill and another Colonel attack error ended the set, 25-19.
Down by one in the fourth, the Governors used a 5-0 run to take the lead. MacKenzie finished it with a kill to put her team ahead 22-18. Maggie Duyos ended the set, 25-20, and tied the match with a kill.
EKU took a 10-8 lead in the fifth on a kill from Hill. Kayleigh Ryan's service ace put the home team in front 12-11. Payton Deidesheimer's kill gave the Governors match-point at 14-12. Back-to-back kills from
Kambree Lucas tied it at 14-14. After APSU grabbed match-point again, 15-14, the Colonels scored three straight to end it. Lucas tied it with another kill. A block from Hill and
Paige Wagers put EKU ahead by one. Hill's kills ended it at 17-15.
The Colonels hit just .173, making 35 attack errors. Austin Peay (1-22, 0-11 ASUN) had only 27 attack errors and out-blocked EKU 16-10.
MacKenzie led APSU with 12 kills. Rita had 11 blocks.
The Colonels conclude their road trip at Lipscomb at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The match will air live on ESPN+.
