LEXINGTON, Ky. – Behind a career-high 24-point performance from two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Week Liz Freihofer and a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double from Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor, EKU overcame an eight-point deficit to defeat Northern Illinois by a score of 76-64 on Wednesday night at the Clive M. Beck Center.
With the win, EKU (9-3) has won eight consecutive games since Nov. 14, continuing the program's longest winning streak since 2005. The Colonels will enter the holiday break with a 4-1 home record and 9-1 mark over non-power-five opponents with one game left on the non-conference schedule at Samford on Dec. 29.
Freihofer led all scorers on Wednesday with a career-high 24 points on 50 percent shooting and a 6-for-9 showing from deep. Her performance was on the heels of being named the ASUN Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday for the second time in her career.
Alongside Freihofer's performance, fellow guard Althea Kara Angeles scored 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting with two three pointers to total 40 points across two games in the EKU MTE. Her showing in the two-game event were career-best totals from the fifth year from Australia.
Down low, EKU had another outstanding performance from fifth year forward Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor who notched consecutive double-doubles with 15 points and 10 rebounds against the Huskies. The Omaha, Nebraska native went 5-for-11 from the floor, 5-for-6 from the free throw line and had the second most blocks of her career (4) in the win.
As a team, EKU trailed in the first and second quarters ending with a six-point, 35-29, deficit to overcome at halftime.
The Colonels turned its shooting woes around after the intermission shooting 39 percent from the field with five made three-pointers and a 16-for-20 effort from the free throw line to turn the game around and seal a 76-64 comeback win over NIU.
Guards Kaitlyn Costner and Alice Recanati combined for 15 points, nine of which came in the second half after dealing with foul trouble in the first 20 minutes of action.
Northern Illinois (4-5) falls in the effort despite having the advantage in field goal percentage (36.7), free throw percentage (85.0), and rebounds (46). The Colonels forced the Huskies into 18 turnovers and outscored the visitors by a wide 30-15 margin in the fourth quarter.
EKU returns to action on Dec. 29 against Samford on the road to end the non-conference slate. The non-conference finale can be streamed live on ESPN+ and heard over the airwaves on 92.5 WEKY starting 30 minutes before tipoff with Wes Chandler courtside on the call.
