RICHMOND, Ky. – Sophomore
Nathan Lawson pitched a complete game shutout as Eastern Kentucky University opened an Atlantic Sun Conference weekend series with a 10-0 victory over North Alabama in seven innings on Friday.
Lawson limited the Lions to two hits over seven innings. The Russell Springs, Kentucky native walked one and struck out six. It was the longest outing of his career and he tied his career-best for strikeouts. Lawson retired the side in order five times and sat down the final seven batters he faced.
The Colonels (5-18, 3-1 ASUN) gave Lawson all the runs he would need in the second inning.
Max Williams led off with a double down the right field line. He moved to third on a fly ball and then scored on a ground out.
Williams finished the game 2-for-2 with a run and three RBIs.
EKU scored four runs in the third and four more in the fifth.
Conner Davis had a 2-run double and Williams added a sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Colonels had two sacrifice flies in the fourth inning to go along with a run-scoring single from Williams.
Williams drove in his third run of the game, and made it 10-0, in the bottom of the sixth with another sacrifice fly.
Tait Nunnally went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Miguel Larreal scored twice, walked twice and drove in two.
Zak Majer and Leighton Jenkins had one hit each for the Lions (8-13, 1-3 ASUN).
Game two of the series on Saturday is set for a 6 p.m. start. Saturday is Superhero Night. Fans will receive a FREE special edition EKU baseball poster and enjoy in-game superhero content. There will also be a face painter at the game.
