Shaffer, Franklin Homer In Series Opening Loss To Stetson

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Silas Shaffer and Ron Franklin Jr. both hit home runs in Eastern Kentucky University's 11-3 loss to Stetson in the Atlantic Sun Conference series opener on Thursday at Earle Combs Stadium.
 
Shaffer got the Colonels on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo shot over the wall in in left field.  His third of the season made it 2-1 in favor of Stetson.
 
EKU tied it, 2-2, in the third on Shaffer's RBI single to left center.
 
The Hatters (17-9, 5-2 ASUN) pulled away with five runs in the fifth inning.  Daniel Labrador started the scoring with an RBI single through the left side.  Yohann Dessureault had an RBI double and Isaiah Barkett capped the frame with a run scoring single to right.
 
Stetson scored four in the top of the seventh to pull ahead 11-2.  Franklin hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the seventh.  It was his fifth of the season.
 
Shaffer was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.  Miguel Larreal also had two hits for the Colonels (8-19, 5-2 ASUN).
 
Labrador had a 2-for-5 night with a run and two RBIs for Stetson.  Nick Durgin pitched five innings in relief and picked up the win.  He allowed one run on three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
 
Game two of the series is on Friday at 6 p.m.  The first EKU baseball trading card giveaway is scheduled for Friday.
