Colonels Drop Series Opener To Wright State

RICHMOND, Ky. –
EKU closed to within one midway through the game, but a pair of solo home runs allowed Wright State to pull out a 5-3 win in the series opener on Friday at Earle Combs Stadium.
 
Wright State (5-7) struck first with three runs in the top of the fourth.  Boston Smith had an RBI double in the inning.  EKU (2-12) platted a pair in the bottom half of the frame.  Tait Nunnally drove in a run with a single to right center.  Boone Shevey scored later on a fielder's choice.
 
Solo home runs by Julian Greenwell in the fifth and Ben Vore in the seventh allowed the Raiders to pull ahead by three, 5-2.
 
Conner Davis scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Max Williams in the eighth to cut the deficit to two.  Davis had a 3-hit day, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.  Williams was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
Greenwell finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI for Wright State.  Jake Shirk (1-2) earned the win after pitching seven innings.  He allowed two runs on nine hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four.
 
Nathan Lawson (1-1) started for EKU and surrendered four runs on five hits in five innings.  He walked two and struck out five.  Freshman Bradley Stewart struck out three of the five batters he faced in one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
 
Game two of the series is now scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday.  There will be an EKU blanket giveaway on Saturday.
