JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After allowing five runs in the first two innings, and falling behind 5-2, Eastern Kentucky Universiity shutout North Florida the rest of the way and earned an 8-5 win in the series opener on Friday.

The Ospreys (14-13, 4-6 ASUN) scored three times in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Jakob Runnels hit a 2-run home run to cap the quick start.Â

Santiago Peralta got the Colonels (9-21, 6-4 ASUN) on the board in the top of the second with a 2-run single up the middle, but North Florida came back in the bottom half and scored two more. Gabriel Esquivel hit a 2-run home run to make it 5-2.

Nathan Lawson settled in. Following a 1-out single in the third, Lawson retired the next nine batters he faced, working into the sixth before an Osprey reach on an error with one out. Lawson still faced the minimum in the sixth after catcher
Silas Shaffer gunned down the runner attempting to steal to end the frame.

The sophomore allowed five runs on six hits in six innings to earn his third win of the season.

Ron Franklin Jr.'s 2-run home run in the top of the third inning got the visitors within one, 5-4. The Colonels tied it in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from
Colby Ott.

A 3-run seventh allowed EKU to pull ahead.Â
Conner Davis started it with a double down the left field line and then scored with one out on a single to right off the bat of
DJ Sullivan. Shaffer followed with an RBI single to center field.Â
Tait Nunnally came on to pinch hit and sent a single up the middle to score Sullivan and put the Colonels ahead 8-5.

Joe Clancy pitched the final three innings to earn the save. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four.

Davis finished 2-for-5 with two runs. Franklin was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Sullivan had a 2-for-5 day with two runs and one RBI. Peralta drove in two while going 1-for-3.

Runnels finished 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs for North Florida.
