Lawson, Clancy Combine To 3-Hit FGCU, Davis Drives In Winning Run In The Ninth

Box Score

FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Nathan Lawson and Joe Clancy combined for a 3-hitter, and Conner Davis drove in the winning run in the ninth inning as Eastern Kentucky University evened its Atlantic Sun Conference series with a 2-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.

Mauri Bejarano started the ninth with a single through the left side and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.  The freshman shortstop moved to third on a wild pitch.  After Miguel Larreal drew a walk, Davis lifted a fly ball into left field deep enough to score Bejarano for the lead.

Clancy retired the side in order in the bottom half of the ninth to secure the win.

Lawson, the starter, turned in his second quality start of the season.  The sophomore from Russell Springs, Kentucky allowed one run on two hits in six innings.  He walked two and struck out three.  Clancy (5-3) pitched the final three innings, allowing just two base runners on a hit and a walk.  The senior struck out four and earned the win.

The Eagles platted the first run of the game in the bottom of the third.  Trevor Kole led off with a double down the right field line.  With two outs, Kole came home on a double to center field by Mac Moise.  Those were the only two hits FGCU had until the eighth inning.

Justin Carinci led off the top of the seventh with the first hit of the game for the Colonels, a single to left center.  Two batters later, Davis beat out an infield single and Carinci moved to third on an error.  With two outs in the inning, freshman Tait Nunnally tied the game with a single down the right field line.

Davis finished 1-or-3 with an RBI.  Nunnally was also 1-for-3 and drove in a run.

Three different Eagles had one hit each.  FGCU starter Cameron Bye allowed one run on two hits, walked one and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings.

The series finale is set for Sunday at 12 p.m., and will air live on ESPN+.
