Colonels Wrap Up Trip To Michigan With Win Over SEMO

Box Score

MOUNT PLESANT, Mich. –
EKU wrapped up the Chippewa Invitational with a 3-0 win over Southeast Missouri on Saturday at Central Michigan.

The Colonels (6-3) won by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23.

Sarah Mitchell, AG Vandagriff and Emilee Hill were selected to the Chippewa Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Mitchell led all players with 12 kills.  Carson Ledford finished with nine kills, no errors, a .600 attack percentage and three blocks.

The Colonels scored the first three points of the first set and led the entire way.  A kill from Madi Tolzman capped a 7-1 run to start the match.  Emma Closurdo made it 12-4 with a kill.  One of seven kills in the first set from Mitchell pushed the lead to nine, 15-6.  Consecutive kills from Tolzman and Paige Wagers made it a double figure lead, 21-10.  Mitchell's kill ended the set, 25-18.

The second set was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points.  SEMO's Ramiri Gardner tied it at 20-20 with a kill, but EKU answered.  Setter Emilee Hill recorded a kill and then served up an ace for a 22-20 lead.  A Redhawk attack error followed by a kill from Mitchell stretched it to a 4-0 run.  Another kill from Mitchell capped off a run of five straight to end the set, 25-20, and give the Colonels a 2-0 lead.

Southeast Missouri (3-6) scored the first three points of the third set and led most of the set.  The Redhawks went in front 20-17 after an EKU attack error.  However, the Colonels swung the momentum in their direction with a 4-0 run.  SEMO made a service error and two attack errors, and Hill served up an ace during the run.  Southeast rebounded and took a 22-21 advantage on a kill from Marin Johnson.  Ledford tied it with a kill before back-to-back kills from Mitchell gave the Colonels match-point at 24-22.  Moments later, Ledford finished it off, 25-23, with another kill.

Hill provided four kills, four aces, 21 assists and 11 digs in the winning effort.  Wagers gave EKU five blocks and four kills.  The Colonels out-blocked SEMO 8-2.

Lucy Arndt and Abby Johnson led Southeast Missouri with 10 kills each.

The Colonels will play at Marshall on Tuesday at 6 p.m.  The match will air live on ESPN+.
