Colonels Battle With Rebels in Season-Opening Doubleheader

OXFORD, Miss. - The Eastern Kentucky University men's tennis team opened up the 2025 spring season on the read with a doubleheader battle against the Rebels of Ole Miss on Monday at the William F. Galtney Indoor Tennis Center.

The Colonels (0-2, 0-0 ASUN) dropped both matches against the Rebels (2-0, 0-0 SEC), but battled closely against their SEC foe in both contests.

MATCH ONE - EKU 0, OLE MISS 4

Doubles action was hotly contested in both matches with the Rebels earning the point in match one, 2-0, with a 6-2 victory on court three. The action of court one was hotly contested as Ole Miss snuck away with the win to take the doubles point in a game that went to a tiebreaker set, 7-6. The match on court two was called early with the doubles point decided at a score of 6-6.

The Rebels grabbed the three necessary points in singles play on courts two, four, and five to secure the match. The matches on courts one, three, and six were called early where Fernando Bulnes and Romeo Elfving Navarro dropped their first sets in hotly contested 5-7 results while Nuno Pinheiro had taken a commanding 4-0 lead in the second set.

MATCH TWO - EKU 1, OLE MISS 4

The Colonels dominated doubles play to open up round two. The duos of Christian Cantos Siemers & Pinheiro and Ryan Kitchin & Adrian Contreras secured comfortable 6-3 wins on courts two and three. Meanwhile, Bulnes and Mario Monclus Martin were poised to make it a 3-0 sweep in doubles play had the action not been called early, ending the matchup with a 5-3 lead on court one

The Rebels made their comeback in singles play, taking four of the six matches to secure match two of the doubleheader, but the Colonels showed impressive performances. Bulnes took the first set of his singles match on court one at 6-3 before the match was called in the second set. Pinheiro showed his fight once again as well, bouncing back from a first set defeat to end the second set at 4-4 before being called.

The road trip continues for the Colonels as they take on the University of Louisville Cardinals in another round of doubleheader action. The contest is set for January 15 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in Louisville, KY with match one scheduled for noon and match two slated for 5 p.m.
