RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team didn't have enough in the tank falling to Austin Peay in overtime by a score of 59-57 on Thursday night at Baptist Health Arena.
With the loss, EKU (12-6, 2-3 ASUN) falls below .500 in Atlantic Sun Conference play with 13 games left in the regular season.
Senior guard
Alice Recanati set program history in the loss by appearing in her 139th game in the maroon and white, passing former teammate Bria Bass' record of 138 appearances held since 2022. The Bergamo, Italy dropped a team-leading 17 points on 50 percent shooting and two made threes. She also had eight rebounds and six assists in the game.
Freshman guard
Liz Freihofer was the other Colonel ending in double figure scoring with 16 points on 50 percent shooting. The Kentuckian added seven rebounds, all coming on the defensive end of the floor. Thursday's performance was her 10th career game with 10 or more points.
EKU shot 30 percent (19-for-63) from the floor and was forced into 20 turnovers. The Colonels brought down 44 rebounds and out-shot the Govs from with seven made threes and an 80 percent (12-for-15) showing from the free throw line.
Austin Peay (9-7, 4-1 ASUN) was led by Sa'Mya Wyatt who ended with a 23-point, 10-rebound double double. She went 10-for-16 from the floor playing all 45 minutes of Thursday's game.
The Colonels were unable to get in their typical fast-paced rhythm in the first half, being held to under 30 points going into the halftime break with a narrow 23-16 lead over the Govs.
Austin Peay had its best quarter of the game in the third outscoring EKU, 18-11, off made baskets by Wyatt and Anala Nelson.
Despite both teams scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter, EKU was unable to convert on a last second attempt to force a 50-point draw at the end of regulation. The Govs continued their hot shooting into the overtime period and won Thursday's game, 59-57, despite EKU having the ball at the end of the period.
EKU returns to action on Saturday facing in-state Bellarmine back inside Baptist Health Arena at 4 p.m. ET.
