Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Steal And Layup Sends EKU To Win Over Bellarmine

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Jordan Crawford's midcourt steal off an inbounds pass and layup with 27.6 seconds left in the game allowed EKU to open up a 5-point lead on its way to a 72-69 win over Bellarmine on Saturday at Baptist Health Arena.

Following Crawford's basket, Kenyon Goodin completed an old-fashioned 3-point play with 19.5 seconds remaining to keep the Knights in the game.  After an EKU free throw, Billy Smith made it a 1-point game on a layup with only 4.4 seconds to play.

Bellarmine committed a foul before the ball came in play, sending George Kimble III to the line.  The sophomore guard hit both.  The best the Knights could do is a last second 2-point attempt that missed.

Kimble scored a game-best 21 points for EKU (9-10, 3-3 ASUN).  He also grabbed seven rebounds, made three steals and handed out two assists.  Turner Buttry hit five 3-pointers on eight attempts and finished with 15 points, three assists and three steals.  Montavious Myrick contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, two steals, two blocks and two assists.

Bellarmine (3-16, 0-6 ASUN) went 9-for-15 (60 percent) from 3-point range, led by Smith who hit three on four attempts and led the Knights with 20 points.

A three from Curt Hopf gave Bellarmine a 55-53 lead with 8:06 left in the game.  However, the Colonels answered with seven straight.  Crawford started it with a 3-pointer from the left wing.  Myrick finished it with a pair free throws for a 60-55 advantage with 5:38 to go.

EKU maintained the lead the rest of the game.  Kimble gave his squad another 5-point edge, 65-60, with a 3-pointer from the left wing with 3:36 on the clock.  The Knights got within one on layups from Goodin and Smith, the second coming with 1:30 remaining.

Kimble's layup pushed the home team back in front by three before Crawford made the key steal and turned it into a 5-point lead.

Bellarmine shot 49 percent from the field for the game and out-rebounded EKU 31-24.  The Colonels made 12 steals and forced 16 turnovers, seven more than they committed.  EKU connected on 46 percent of its shots from the floor and 86 percent at the free throw line (19-of-22).

EKU will host Stetson on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.  It will be Arcade Night at Baptist Health Arena with arcade games around the concourse and fun in-game content.
