FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team couldn't get it going offensively to drop a road game to perennial league favorite, FGCU, by a score of 86-56 on Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena.
Kaitlyn Costner led the Colonels with 15 points while
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor dropped the 10th double double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
EKU (13-8, 3-5 ASUN) falls to ninth place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings with an 0-2 road trip and losses in five of its last seven league games.
The Colonels and Eagles played a contested first 10 minutes of action and despite a 5-0 FGCU run to open the game, made layups by Costner,
Althea Kara Angeles, and a made three would bring EKU to a 7-7 standoff near the media timeout. FGCU would go on to win the opening quarter 22-15.
The second and third quarters were both FGCU, who won the frames 20-9 and 23-11 to find themselves with a 30-point lead heading into the final quarter.
EKU would tie the fourth quarter 21-21, but the damage from the first 30 minutes of play would result in an 86-56 FGCU win on Saturday.
As a team, the Colonels shot 38 percent from the field as FGCU shot 50 percent from the field with nine made threes. The Colonels were outrebounded 39-24, their lowest rebounding total of the season.
FGCU's Lauryn Taylor led the game with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Khamari Mitchell-Steen added 15 in the effort.
EKU returns to action next Thursday facing Jacksonville back inside Baptist Health Arena at 7 p.m. ET. Fans can purchase tickets
