AG Hynes Fuels EKU Sweep Of Queens

RICHMOND, Ky. –
AG Hynes had 12 kills and only two errors as the Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team swept visiting Queens, 3-0, on Friday at the Olympic Sports Training Center.
 
EKU won by scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-16.
 
Hynes had a .455 attack percentage in 22 attempts and one block.  Emilee Hill totaled seven kills, 11 digs and a match-high 24 assists.  Four players had seven or more kills.
 
The Colonels (11-6, 3-2 ASUN) trailed for much of the first set, including falling behind 15-12 on a kill from Camryn Teasley.  EKU responded with a 7-2 run to take the lead for good.  Amanda Mack tied the score at 15-15 with a kill.  A block from Caitlyn Flees and Mack put the home team in front.  A Queens attack error ended the run and gave the Colonels a 2-point edge, 19-17.  Flees closed out the opener with a kill.
 
After the Royals (11-7, 2-3 ASUN) battled back from a 6-point deficit in the second set to tie the score at 16-16, the set was tied six more times.  Hynes broke the final tie with a kill to make it 23-22 in favor of the Colonels.  Carson Ledford finished off the set with a kill and gave her team a 2-0 lead.
 
EKU scored five of the first six points to start the third set.  A block by Hill and a setting error for Queens put the Colonels on top 10-4.  Hynes pushed it to a 15-6 advantage with a kill.  An ace from Hill made it 20-6 and capped a run of eight unanswered.  Hill's kill and a Queens attack error ended the set, and the match.
 
The Colonels finished with nine more kills, 45-36 and five fewer errors.  EKU hit .294 as a team, compared to .155 for the Royals.  Queens had a 7-5 edge in blocks.
 
The Royals entered the match leading the Atlantic Sun Conference with a .193 opponents' hitting percentage.
 
Elizabeth Layson posted a team-high eight kills for the visitors. 
 
Sunday's contest against UWG is set for noon and will air live on ESPN+.  This will be the annual Dig Pink match, with FREE pink rally towels being given away.
