EKU Remains In First Place After Sweep Of Bellarmine

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University's volleyball team won its fifth straight and remained in a tie for first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference by beating Bellarmine University, 3-0, on Friday at the Olympic Sports Training Center.
 
The Colonels have secured a spot in the ASUN Tournament and improve to 18-7 overall and 10-3 in league matches.
 
EKU won the match against Bellarmine by scores of 25-21, 25-14 and 25-12.
 
Addison Burke led all players with 13 kills.  She made only two errors in 33 attempts for a .333 attack percentage.  The freshman also had eight digs and two aces.  Emilee Hill contributed 17 assists, 10 digs and eight kills.  She did not make an attack error in 16 attempts.  AG Hynes finished with six blocks and seven kills.
 
With the first set tied at 14-14, the Colonels seized control by scoring five straight.  A kill from Hill and two straight attack errors put the home team ahead 19-14.  An ace off the serve by Burke pushed her team ahead by six, 21-15.  EKU took the opener on another attack error from the Knights.
 
With the second set tied 2-2 early, the Colonels scored five straight to create a cushion.  Caitlyn Flees made it 7-2 with a kill.  Burke's kill pushed EKU ahead 11-5.  Burke's ace made it a 7-point set, 14-7.  Carson Ledford gave her team a 20-12 lead with a kill.  Burke's kill ended the set and handed the Colonels a 2-0 lead.
 
Bellarmine went up 8-6 in the third set on a kill from Kylie Van Hoy.  EKU answered by scoring the next seven points.  Three straight kills from Hill made it 12-8.  Cooper Abney capped the run with a setter dump for a 13-8 advantage.  A run of four straight later in the set put the Colonels on top 18-11.  A kill from Flees gave EKU a 10-point advantage, 22-12.  A solo block from Hynes finished off the sweep.
 
Bellarmine (11-14, 5-8 ASUN) made 22 attack errors and hit .071 for the match.  EKU made only nine errors and posted a .327 attack percentage.  The Colonels held a 9-1 advantage in blocks and a 6-2 edge in service aces.
 
Van Hoy had eight kills for the Knights.
 
EKU will play at Stetson at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
