RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior guard
Kaitlyn Costner dished out 12 assists that helped the EKU women's basketball team roll to victory over North Florida by a wide score of 78-44 on Saturday afternoon at Baptist Health Arena.
With Saturday's win, EKU (15-8, 5-5 ASUN) has won two Atlantic Sun Conference games in a row and return to even in league play heading into the dog days of the slate.
Costner led the Colonels with 12 assists in Saturday's win—tying the fourth most assists by a player in a single game in program history. The Indiana native followed with eight points in the win.
Four other EKU players ended in double figure scoring,
Althea Kara Angeles dropped a team-high 15 points while
Raphaela Toussaint had 11 and
Liz Freihofer,
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor scored 10.
As a team, EKU shot 49 percent from the floor and had assists in 23 of its 27 made field goals. The Colonels' 23 assists against the Ospreys were their second most of the season.
EKU scored 28 points in the first quarter, 18 in the second quarter, 20 in the third quarter, and 15 in the final period of play. Toussaint, Angeles, and Freihofer had huge first half efforts to help the Colonels lead by 22 at halftime.
In the second half, EKU extended its lead to 30 with two minutes left to play in the third. North Florida would play a competitive fourth quarter, only losing the frame by two points, but wasn't able to escape the Colonels offensive attack, highlighted by two made threes by
Ambah Kowcun to end the contest, 78-44.
North Florida (4-19, 0-10 ASUN) will head into next week's conference games winless in league play. The Ospreys had a team-high 10 points from guard Anja Rafnsdottir, but as a team shot under 30 percent in the game.
