CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team picked up its seventh win inside Atlantic Sun Conference play defeating Queens University by a score of 75-62 on Wednesday night at Curry Arena.
EKU (17-9, 7-6 ASUN) has won four of its last five games inside league play as the schedule winds down with five games left on the doc. As of Thursday morning, the Colonels are tied for fifth place in the conference standings and are on the cusp of clinching a spot in the 2025 ASUN Conference Women's Basketball Tournament for the fourth straight year as a member in the league.
Freihofer led the Colonels with 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting and a perfect 5-for-5 clip from beyond the three-point line. Thursday's performance was third time in her young career eclipsing 20 or more points and the 15th time in her career in double figure scoring. The Union, Kentucky native followed her point figure with a team-high nine rebounds—nearing her second career double double.
Three other Colonels ended in double figures, fifth year forward
Raphaela Toussaint had 14 points while senior guard
Kaitlyn Costner had 13 points and fifth year guard
Alice Recanati had 10 points—both figures coming in 39 minutes of game action.
As a team, EKU shot 49 percent from the floor and 61 percent from beyond the arch—knocking down eight threes for the first time in over two games. The Colonels went to the free throw line 23 times, making 17 shots from the charity stripe for a 74 percent showing. EKU also outrebounded the Royals by one rebound, 35-34, marking 16-of-26 games this season with a positive value over their opponents.
Queens (8-16, 2-11 ASUN) played competitively with the Colonels forcing 12 lead changes and holding over 10 minutes of game time with the lead. Kemia Ward led the Royals with 16 points while Aylesha Wade scored 14 points with a 6-for-8 showing from the field.
At the halftime break, EKU and Queens were all tied up at 30 points with the Royals winning the first quarter, 19-18, and the Colonels winning the second quarter, 12-11.
Freihofer got the Colonels going out of the break with her own five-point run off a made three and fastbreak layup. Fellow freshman
Mya Wardle knocked down a three a few possessions later, followed by another three from Freihofer and layups from Costner, Toussaint to end the frame leading, 51-43.
EKU pushed its lead to double digits over Queens near the start of the fourth quarter, however, the Royals cut it to just six points off back-to-back scoring possessions with just over six minutes left to play. Freihofer and Toussaint knocked down three three-pointers in the Colonels' next three possessions to bump their lead to 13 points, the largest of the game, and put the contest out of reach. EKU won Thursday's game 75-62 over Queens to move up in the conference standings.
EKU returns to action on Saturday making the short trip across I-64 to face Bellarmine at Knights Hall for the first time as in-state conference members. Saturday's game is scheduled to tipoff at 1 p.m. ET and tickets can be purchased
