OXFORD, Miss. – Eastern Kentucky University suffered a 9-3 loss to Mississippi in the series finale on Sunday.

After platting two runs in the first inning, the Rebels (6-1) added four more in the second to build the big early lead. Campbell Smithwick hit a 2-run home run over the wall in right field in the second inning.

EKU (0-7) got on the board in the top of the third. Leading off the inning,
Hayden Duffield sent a 2-0 pitch sailing over the wall in left field to close the gap to 6-1.

A 2-run home run by
Julius Scearce in the eighth cut the deficit to 9-3. It was the second straight game that Scearce has homered.

Duffield finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Scearce had a 3-for-3 game with a double, a home run, a walk, a run and two RBIs.

Mitchell Sanford went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Rebels. Mason Nichols started and allowed one run on three hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked one.
