Colonels Drop Series Finale At Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. –
Eastern Kentucky University suffered a 9-3 loss to Mississippi in the series finale on Sunday.
 
After platting two runs in the first inning, the Rebels (6-1) added four more in the second to build the big early lead.  Campbell Smithwick hit a 2-run home run over the wall in right field in the second inning.
 
EKU (0-7) got on the board in the top of the third.  Leading off the inning, Hayden Duffield sent a 2-0 pitch sailing over the wall in left field to close the gap to 6-1.
 
A 2-run home run by Julius Scearce in the eighth cut the deficit to 9-3.  It was the second straight game that Scearce has homered.
 
Duffield finished 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Scearce had a 3-for-3 game with a double, a home run, a walk, a run and two RBIs.
 
Mitchell Sanford went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Rebels.  Mason Nichols started and allowed one run on three hits in four innings.  He struck out five and walked one.
 
EKU will play at Western Kentucky on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
