RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University opened Atlantic Sun Conference play with a doubleheader split against visiting Bellarmine on Friday at Earle Combs Stadium. The Knights won game one 10-0 before the Colonels picked up a 2-1 win in game two.
Bellarmine scored first in game two when Eli Watson drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the third inning. The Colonels tied it up in the bottom of the fifth when
Colby Ott led off with a home run over the wall in left field, his first of the season.
EKU (1-17, 1-1 ASUN) took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Ott started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs,
Julius Scearce drove a 2-1 pitch through the right side to give his team a 2-1 lead.
The Knights started the top of the ninth with a single to get the tying run on base. However, a double play erased that runner and put the Colonels one out from the win. Another single kept the game going before
Wyatt Foley got a ground ball to second base to end the game.
Foley earned the win after pitching the final 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out one. Scearce had a 2-for-4 game with an RBI. Ott finished 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs and an RBI.
Landon Akers went 4-for-5 for Bellarmine (4-14, 1-1 ASUN).
In game one, the Knights got all they would need with three runs in the top of the first inning. Joey Milto started it with a 2-run home run over the wall in left field. Charlie Rife hit a solo home run in the second and Milto added an RBI single for a 5-0 lead after two innings.
Milto finished 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Watson had four hits in five at bats, scored a run and drove in one. Bellarmine starter Carver Chase pitched six scoreless innings with three walks and seven strikeouts.
AJ Groeneveld went 3-for-5 for the Colonels in the first game.
