Rockcastle Native Shaffer Leads Colonels To Series Win

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Rockcastle County native Silas Shaffer had three hits and drove in four to lead Eastern Kentucky University to an 8-7 series clinching victory over Bellarmine on Sunday at Earle Combs Stadium.

With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Diego Alana led off with a single to right center and Colby Ott was hit by a pitch.  After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Shaffer lifted a single into right center to bring both home.

Jay Douglas started the sixth inning with a leadoff double.  Julius Scearce followed with a 2-run home run 406 feet over the wall in straight away center field to extend the margin to 7-3.

The Knights (4-15, 1-2 ASUN) pushed across two unearned runs in the top of the seventh and two more unearned in the eighth to tie it 7-7.

Scearce drew a walk to start the bottom of the eighth and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Ott drove an 0-2 pitch into right center to plate what proved to be the winning run.

Shaffer finished 3-for-4 with a run and four RBIs.  Scearce was 1-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.  Douglas also had a 3-for-4 day and scored a run.

Wyatt Foley (2-1) earned his second win of the weekend after pitching the final 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit or a run.  He walked one and struck out one.

Freshman Carson van Haaren gave EKU a quality start on the mound.  The right-hander allowed five runs but only two were earned in 6 2/3 innings.  He gave up five hits, walked one and struck out seven.

The Colonels (2-17, 2-1 ASUN) grabbed a first inning 2-0 lead on a 2-run double to right center from Shaffer.  The Knights answered with two runs in the top of the second to tie it up.  Charlie Rife's single through the left side drove in the tying run.

Mauri Bejarano broke the tie in the fourth with an RBI single down the left field line.  Once again, Bellarmine had the answer.  In the top of the fifth, Seth Sweet-Chick hit a solo home run with two outs in the inning to make it 3-3.

Five different players had one hit each for the Knights.  Eli Watson scored two runs.

EKU's 8-game home stand continues Tuesday against Marshall at 6 p.m.  Tuesday will be $2 Day.  Tickets, popcorn and beer are just $2.
