Underhill Pitches Four Shutout Innings As Colonels Win Third Straight

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Sophomore Elijah Underhill pitched four shutout innings to fuel the baseball team's 6-2 win over Marshall on Tuesday at Earle Combs Stadium.

It was the Colonels third straight victory.

EKU scored in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Colby Ott.  A 2-out RBI single from Diego Alana in the third made it 2-0 in favor of the home team.

Underhill pitched into the fifth inning.  He allowed just two hits but issued five walks, including two to start the fifth inning.  He gave way to Ryker Walton who, with the help of an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play, got out of the jam without any runners scoring.

After Ethan Murdoch got the Thundering Herd on the board with a solo home run in the top of the sixth, EKU (3-17) answered in the bottom half of the inning.

With runners at the corners and no outs, Silas Shaffer singled up the middle to push the margin back to two, 3-1.  Tait Nunnally followed with an RBI single to center.  Mauri Bejarano added a sacrifice fly to short right field that the second baseman caught running away from the infield.  Nunnally capped the 4-run inning when he scored on a passed ball to make it 6-1.

Marshall (11-10) scored one in the seventh but left the bases loaded after Nathan Lawson got a strikeout and a ground ball back to the mound to end the rally attempt.  Burkley Bounds pitched the final two innings without allowing a hit or a run.  He walked one and struck out five of the seven batters he faced.

Nunnally finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Seven different players had one hit each for Marshall.  Niu Maika was 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.

EKU will host Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.  It will be $2 Day and Fan Appreciation Day.  There will be nine innings of winnings with a prize drawing for fans each inning.
