LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky softball team ended the weekend on a high note, sweeping the series against the Bellarmine Knights with a 9-0 run rule victory.
The Colonels (22-7, 5-0 ASUN) recorded their second run rule win of the weekend and their third in the last six games as they stay undefeated in ASUN play.
Maddi Rutan (10-5) and
Brooke Davis combined to allow just four hits and strikeout three batters for the Colonel pitching staff's third shutout in a row.
The Colonel bats did not miss a step from yesterday's performance, scoring multiple runs in four of the five innings.
Rutan started the scoring almost immediately for the Colonels as just the third batter, tallying a double that stretched into a triple on the throw to score
Reese Knox.
Skyler Billips followed up with a sacrifice groundout to score Rutan - her third straight game with an RBI.
Jada McLeod helped Rutan cross home plate a second time in the third inning. The freshman dropped in a single to center field that caused an error by the Knight center fielder to bring Rutan home from second.
Lilly Davis added another RBI groundout later in the inning to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Two more runs in the fourth innings put the Colonels on the edge of run rule territory. Rutan picked up her fifth and sixth RBIs of the weekend, this time with a single that scored
Jaelin Haynes and
Emily Mariscal.
The Colonels put the game into run rule territory in the fifth with a final two runs. A good eye from
Jaelin Haynes earned her an RBI, drawing a walk with the bases loaded before Knox added on the insurance run with a sac fly to left for the final score of 9-0.
