RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team advances to the 2025 Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Basketball Tournament semifinals with a 77-60 win over No. 5 seed Stetson on Saturday night at Baptist Health Arena.
Saturday's win marks consecutive season EKU (21-11, 10-8 ASUN) has appeared in the ASUN Conference semifinals. Last year, the Colonels earned an at-large bid in the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) following its run in the conference tournament.
EKU was led by fifth year guard and Second Team All-ASUN selection,
Alice Recanati, who dropped 20 points off a 7-of-14 showing from the field and 2-for-3 clip from beyond the arch. The Bergamo, Italy native bumped her program-leading career assist total to 674 with seven against the Hatters.
Additionally, four other Colonels ended with double figure scoring totals, fifth year forward
Raphaela Toussaint was next in the scoring column with 17 points off two made 3-pointers and seven free throws. Senior forward
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor scored 11 points while guard
Althea Kara Angeles added 11 points and
Kaitlyn Costner put up 10.
As a team, EKU shot 41 percent (27-for-66) from the floor and made nine 3-pointers. The Colonels out-rebounded the Hatters by three boards (34-31) and had assists on 60 percent of its made field goals.
Stetson (16-15, 10-8 ASUN) had 15 points by First Team All-ASUN selection Cameron Thomas and 12 points from Tyra Myers. Despite the 17-point losing margin, the Hatters shot 44 percent (21-for-47) from the floor and 86 percent (13-for-15) from the free throw line. Stetson allowed the Colonels to score 30 points in the fast break off 18 turnovers.
After dropping the first quarter by one point, EKU jolted back winning the second quarter, 19-10, off a six-point run by Recanati and made threes from Angeles and Toussaint. McGinnis-Taylor would put a cap on the first half with a made layup to seal a 36-28 lead for the home team heading into the break.
The Colonels opened the second half with a 6-2 run and never looked back on the scoreboard. EKU claimed a 20-point lead with 4:08 left in regulation off a pair of Toussaint free throws and held the Hatters to just three points in the final three minutes of the contest.
EKU would go on to wun Saturday's game by a score of 77-60, the program's second largest margin of victory over a tournament opponent as a member of the ASUN Conference.
EKU will pack its bags and head to the Sunshine State for the third meeting this season against FGCU. Next Tuesday's game is scheduled to tipoff at 6:30 p.m. ET inside Alico Arena and can be viewed live on ESPN+ or heard online at 92.5 WEKY.
