EKU Spring Preview: Defensive Backs

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University's defensive secondary made massive strides in the 2024 season helping the defense allow only 23.7 points per game, the best in the United Athletic Conference (UAC) while producing the second-best defensive passing efficiency rating of 126.63.

That secondary was led by captain and All-American Mike Smith Jr. whose presence and leadership will have to be replaced, but the Colonel secondary is well stocked with skill and experience heading into this spring camp.

"Right now it's about the simple things, finishing on balls in the air and tackling in open space," said defensive secondary coach Rashad Watson on the group's focus this spring. "Vito [Tisdale] and [Jaheim] Ward have been doing a good job leading in the room by example and verbally and all those small things I expect the leaders in my room to do. We also have some guys in Derek Taylor at safety and Charles Ingram V at corner that are new to the team that I expect to make an impact and are fighting for starting positions."
