Colonels Fall in Series Opener against Bellarmine, 8-6

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team dropped the first game of its season-ending series against in-state rival Bellarmine on Thursday, 8-6.

The Colonels (11-42, 8-20) hung with the Knights (15-38, 9-19) through all nine innings despite giving up five runs in the third, but were unable to make up the difference late as the bats went cold late for EKU.

Bellarmine opened the scoring in the second, getting two runs across courtesy of an RBI double down the right field line and an infield RBI to the right side of the infield.

EKU answered back as Diego Alana doubled down the left field line to begin the third before being driven in to score by AJ Groeneveld doubled down the right field line.

In turn, Groeneveld tied the game at two apiece as Silas Shaffer singled to right center in the next at-bat to bring Groeneveld in to score.

The Knights responded with five more runs in the bottom half of the inning, thanks in part to a triple and two home runs to go up, 7-2.

A walk, a hit by pitch, and a wild pitch to open the fourth saw EKU's Dylan Rogers and Jay Douglas move into scoring position before RBIs by Tait Nunnally and Alana scored the pair, bringing the Colonels back within three runs.

Later in the inning, an infield single to second base by Greg Caban scored Alana. The Colonels were able to work the bases loaded late in the fourth, but were unable to make the Knights pay anymore, flying out to right field as the inning ended at 7-5 in favor of BU.

EKU scored one more run in the fifth inning as pinch hitter Ehinger Adrianza delivered a clutch two-out single through the right side to score Douglas from third to move the Colonels within one run of the Knights.

Bellarmine added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth after an errant throw to first on a fielder's choice allowed a run to come across.

EKU's offense stalled for the remainder of the game, only producing two base runners in the final three innings, neither of which got into scoring position.

The Colonels and Knights will meet again tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET for the second game of their season ending series.
