First Team All-SWAC, NCAA Tournament Hero Amarr Knox Joins Colonels For Next Season

RICHMOND, Ky. – Amarr Knox, whose layup with one second left gave Alabama State an NCAA Tournament first round win, will join the men's basketball team at Eastern Kentucky University for the 2025-26 season.

Knox, a First Team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) pick in 2024-25, scored a team-high 16 points in ASU's 70-68 victory over Saint Francis in the NCAA Tournament.  One of his opponents in that game, Juan Cranford Jr., signed with the Colonels in April.

Knox scored a team-best 18 points and pulled down four rebounds in Alabama State's second round NCAA tourney game against overall top seed Auburn.  He averaged 14.5 points, 2.3 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game this past season.  The 6-foot-3 guard shot 40% from the field, 31% from behind the 3-point line and 76% at the free throw line.

"We're so excited about Amarr joining our program," EKU Head Coach A.W. Hamilton said.  "He's an electrifying player that plays fearless on both ends of the floor.  Amarr had a magical run last March with Alabama State – he's a winner and fits perfectly in our program."

Knox scored a season-high 37 points at Florida A&M on Feb. 3.  He dished out a season-best seven assists at Southern on March 6.

The Memphis, Tennessee native scored 20 or more points in a game nine times.

Knox averaged 4.1 points and 1.2 rebounds while playing in 13 games as a freshman at Alabama State in 2022-23.  He played in 31 games during the 2023-24 season, averaging 6.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

The 3-star guard and Tennessee Class 4A Mr. Basketball finalist originally committed to Memphis out of Bartlett High School.  He led Bartlett (34-7) to the TSSAA state tournament for the first time since 2001 and within a shot of playing for a state championship – losing 70-69 at the buzzer to eventual state champion Dobyns-Bennett.  Knox averaged 18 points his senior season, scoring 33 points in his final high school game with the Panthers.

Knox's fiancé, DaKiyah Sanders, helped Southern University win its first-ever NCAA Tournament game this spring.

EKU won the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in 2024 and competed for a second straight league title up until the final weeks of the season.  The Colonels are the only ASUN team to win six or more conference games in each of the past two seasons.  The team's 8-game ASUN winning streak this past season was the longest conference winning streak for the program since winning 12 straight across the 1964-65 and 1965-66 seasons.  Since Hamilton became the head coach, EKU has broken 103 program records.
