RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball has named
Sophie Smith as its new director of basketball operations and graduate assistant, the program announced Thursday.
"We're very excited for Sophie to join our program," said EKU head women's basketball coach
Greg Todd. "Sophie had a very successful playing career with Anderson County and Georgetown, was mentored by great coaches in Clay Birdwhistell and Jeff Nickel. She has great local ties and will bring a strong work ethic that adds to our staff. We're very excited to have her in Richmond."
Smith comes to EKU after a standout playing career at Georgetown College, where she was a four-year letterwinner and team captain. In November 2024, she set the program's single-game assist record with 18 against Washington Adventist in Maryland.
A native of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, Smith played at Anderson County High School and helped guide the team to two Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Sweet 16 appearances in 2020 and 2021 during her prep career.
With EKU, Smith will assist with on-court responsibilities and contribute to the program's behind-the-scenes operations, including practice setup, facilitating team managers, academics, and helping student-athlete initiatives in the community.
She earned a double major in business administration and marketing from Georgetown earlier this year.
