RICHMOND, Ky. – Fall camp is truly underway for the Eastern Kentucky University football team, as the Colonels held their first team scrimmage of 2025's fall camp on Saturday at CG Bank Field at Roy Kidd Stadium.
"I was really pleased with the attitude of our defense," said head coach
Walt Wells. "They played well the whole scrimmage. We held some guys out to see different guys against different people, and I was really pleased with how they stepped up which is creating some depth for us… At the end offensively I felt like they started to put some things together and begin to gel."
The "Maroon Doom" defense came out strong in the scrimmage, keeping the offense off the board for the first five drives until new Colonel kicker
Buzz Flabiano converted a 50 yard field goal and then a 23 yard field goal in two of the next three drives.
Flabiano ended the live scrimmage period going 3-for-3 on the day of field goal attempts.
EJ Clinkscale showed impressive athleticism on the 13
th drive of the scrimmage intercepting an errant pass at the 35-yard line before returning it to the opposing 49.
The defense got its second interception of the scrimmage three drives later as
Tavarion James intercepted a pass returning it 38-yards to the end zone for the pick-six.
The pick-six brought the defense to three interceptions on the day with
Aden Tagaloa-Nelson having one earlier in the scrimmage to erase a scoring opportunity for the offense.
The offense quickly responded going 88 yards on 12 plays for a touchdown as
Ron Vann Jr. hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass on an out route to score.
Fall camp continues on Monday for EKU ahead of the season opener on August 30 at Louisville.
