Women’s Basketball Picks Up Key Win at West Georgia in ASUN Game of the Week

Colonels Take Three-Game Lead in Conference Standings, Move to 9-0 in Conference

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team moved to 9-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play with a 68-55 victory over West Georgia on Thursday night inside The Coliseum in the league's ASUN Game of the Week.

With the win, EKU improves to 18-4 overall and remains perfect in conference action, taking a commanding three-game lead in the ASUN standings with a road win over the league's second-place Wolves.

Four Colonels finished in double figures, led by senior forward Joseana Vaz, who recorded an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double. Vaz added three 3-pointers in the effort.

Sophomore guard Liz Freihofer posted 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists while knocking down three shots from beyond the arc. With her performance, the Union, Kentucky native moved into the top 10 in program history in career 3-pointers and recorded her 20th double-figure scoring game of the season.

Senior guard Althea Kara Angeles added 12 points, six rebounds, and a team-high five assists on 5-of-8 shooting, while senior guard Ndidiamaka Ndukwe finished with 11 points and three assists.

EKU shot 44 percent (26-of-59) from the field and connected on eight 3-pointers. The Colonels narrowly won the rebounding battle, 39-38, and assisted on 13 of their 26 made field goals.

West Georgia (13-7, 6-3 ASUN) suffered a pivotal loss in the conference race, snapping an 11-game home winning streak and falling to three games down in the standings. Asia Donald led the Wolves with 18 points.

The Colonels came out firing in the opening quarter, knocking down six 3-pointers to build a 26-10 lead. Vaz scored early with a layup and two triples, while Freihofer added a pair of 3s as EKU assisted on eight of its 10 first-quarter field goals and forced four turnovers.

Defense carried EKU in a slower-paced second quarter as the Colonels held West Georgia in check and took a 34-26 lead into halftime. Ndukwe provided a spark with a basket inside and a 3-pointer as EKU controlled the glass.

EKU pushed the margin back to 14 by the end of the third quarter. Vaz hit another 3 and got to the free-throw line during a key stretch, Freihofer added a transition 3, and Angeles converted a three-point play to make it 53-39.

West Georgia attempted a late rally, but EKU remained composed down the stretch. Angeles opened the fourth with a jumper, and the Colonels closed out the 68-55 win with balanced scoring and timely defensive stops.

EKU returns to action tomorrow facing Queens University at 6 p.m. ET in Charlotte. The game was moved from Saturday due to the threat of winter weather in the local area over the weekend. Fans can find the game streamed live on ESPN+.
