Game 1 Box Score (pdf)
DAYTON, Ohio. – Redshirt freshman
Dylan Littlefield hit a home run in the first inning of both games but the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team lost the first game of a doubleheader at the University of Dayton on Friday, and trailed by three when game two was suspended.
The Flyers won the first game 17-7 in eight innings. Game two was suspended at the start of the seventh inning due to darkness with Dayton leading 12-9. The second game will resume at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday. Game three of the series will follow the conclusion of game two.
Â
Littlefield has now hit a home run in three straight games, starting the streak on Tuesday in EKU's home opener against Northern Kentucky.
Â
Despite the first inning home run in game one from Littlefield, the Colonels fell behind 2-1 in the bottom half. EKU put six on the board in the second to take the lead. Littlefield added a 2-run double to right field in that inning, the first of three straight doubles for the Colonels.Â
David Alvarez and
Jay Douglas each drove in a run with their doubles.Â
Khaleel Pratt wrapped up the second with an RBI infield single for a 7-2 lead.
Â
The Flyers got one back in the bottom of the second to make it 7-3 and then pulled away in the middle innings. Colin Lynch hit a 3-run home run as part of a 5-run fifth inning that gave Dayton an 8-7 lead. UD added two in the sixth and six runs in the seventh.
Â
Littlefield finished 3-for-4 with two runs and 3 RBIs. Martin Howell had a 3-for-5 game with two runs and two RBIs for the Flyers.
Â
After a leadoff walk to start game two, Littlefield sent a ball over the wall down the right field line for an early 2-0 lead. With one out in the inning, Douglas singled to center and
Silas Shaffer doubled to center for a 3-0 advantage. Two batters later,
Jackson Cauthron drove in a run with a double to left field. With the bases loaded,
Kobe Benson drew a walk to force home another run.Â
Pedro Moreno capped the 7-run first inning with a run-scoring single to center.
Â
Dayton scored twice in the bottom of the third and then pushed across five in the fourth to tie the game. Jason Bello's 2-out bases loaded 2-run single and Michael Smith Jr.'s 3-run home run accounted for all the runs.
Â
Both teams scored in the sixth. Littlefield drew a bases loaded walk to break the tie. A fielding error in the outfield allowed a second run to score for EKU. Howell answered in the bottom half with a 2-run home run over the wall in left center to tie it again, 9-9. Lynch came off the bench to hit a 3-run home run for a 12-9 lead.
