STATESBORO, Ga. — The Eastern Kentucky University softball team fell 3-0 to Rhode Island in what was scheduled to be the first of a two-game day.
The Colonels (4-7) had their second game against Georgia Southern canceled because of inclement weather.
After the first inning, neither team was able to bring a runner home in what became a defensive duel.
Bayle Hunnicutt pitched 5 scoreless innings in relief, allowing only four hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rhode Island scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first inning on five hits. A leadoff single started the rally, and a throwing error led to the game's first run. The Rams added an RBI double and an RBI single to take a 3-0 lead.
After a pitching change in the first inning, Hunnicutt entered the circle and held the Rams scoreless the rest of the way.
Eastern Kentucky was held scoreless, securing only four hits.
