EKU Opens Colonel Classic with 2-0 Win Over Saint Louis

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team secured a 2-0 victory over Saint Louis on the first day of the Colonel Classic.

The Colonels (5-9) were led by a standout performance in the circle from freshman Bayle Hunnicutt.

Hunnicutt pitched all seven innings, recording nine strikeouts while allowing only two hits across more than 120 pitches, improving to 3-3 on the season.

At the plate, Jaelin Haynes went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED

EKU struck first in the bottom of the opening inning.

After Haynes reached on a single and moved into scoring position on a failed pickoff attempt,

Jada McLeod delivered an RBI double to deep center field to bring Haynes home and give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.

The Colonels added to their advantage in the bottom of the third.

Reese Knox worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on Kennedy Drafton's sacrifice bunt.

Haynes followed with an RBI double to deep center field, scoring Knox to extend the lead to 2-0.

EKU's defense held the Billikens offense in check all day, allowing only two hits and limiting Saint Louis to having two runners on base just once in the top of the first inning.

NEXT UP

The Colonels return tomorrow at 3 p.m. to face Bradley.

Bradley (4-11) on the season dropped a 7-4 matchup against Saint Louis earlier in the day.
