Colonels Give Weisberg 600th Career Win With Sunday Series Clincher

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University's baseball team gave head coach Jan Weisberg his 600th career win with a 10-6 victory over Illinois State on Sunday at Earle Combs Stadium.
 
The Colonels won the series 2-1.
 
Weisberg has now won 600 games across 20 seasons at Transylvania University (1), Birmingham Southern University (17), Valdosta State University (1) and EKU (1st).
 
On Sunday, the Colonels (5-11) scored four runs in the fifth inning, starting a stretch of 10 runs in four innings.
 
EKU trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth.  Ricco Longo's RBI single through the left side got the home team on the board.  With one out and runners at second and third, Pedro Moreno tied it with a double to right center.  Jay Douglas singled to center to bring home Moreno and make it 4-3.
 
After the Redbirds scored twice in the top of the sixth to retake the lead, the Colonels scored two in the bottom half and led the rest of the way.  Longo had a 2-out, 2-run single up the middle to swing EKU back in front 6-5. 
 
Dylan Littlefield hit his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh, a 2-run shot that traveled 404 feet over the wall in right center.  Two more runs in the bottom of the eighth staked the Colonels to a 10-5 lead.  Longo drove in one with a single through the left side.  Kobe Benson's sacrifice bunt plated the second.
 
Illinois State started the ninth with a home run, a single to center and a walk.  Jack Bell rebounded and struck out two straight batters before getting a ground ball to second to end the game.
 
Longo went 3-for-4 with a run and four RBIs.  Littlefield had a 1-for-4 game with a run and two RBIs.  Clay Cartledge came on in relief in the fourth and pitched 1 2/3 innings without allowing a run.  Gavin Faulkner pitched a scoreless seventh inning.  Bell pitched the final two on his way to his third save of the season.  He allowed one run on two hits.
 
Cam Karczewski went 2-for-2 with three RBIs for the Redbirds (8-7).  ISU starter Luke Teschke pitched four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fifth.  He struck out four, walked four and allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings. 
 
EKU will play at Middle Tennessee on Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET.
