RICHMOND, Ky. — The Eastern Kentucky University beach volleyball team improved to 14-7 on the season Sunday, completing a two-match sweep of Morehead State in its home opener.
The Colonels dominated throughout, winning six of 10 flights in straight sets and not dropping a single flight on the day.
Gabriella Armitage and
Elpida Pitsigkoni opened game one with a flight two victory, 21-12, 21-12.
Zsa Zsa Ferguson and
Sutton Sales pushed the lead to 2-0, splitting the first two sets before closing out a momentum-swinging 15-13 third set
Seniors
Sami Deidesheimer and
Arilyn Lee clinched game one for EKU, rallying for a 21-18, 22-20 win in the fifth flight.
Molly Shomock and
Riley Cutler recovered from a first-set loss to take the next two sets, 21-17 and 15-12.
Amanda Floystad and
Carlyn Mcallister closed out game one, dismantling Morehead State in flight three, 21-13, 21-12.
Game two was more of the same for EKU, as the Colonels posted another 5-0 victory. Armitage and Pitsigkoni opened with another straight-set win, 21-18, 21-16.
In flight four, the Eagles took the opening set, but Ferguson and Sales rallied to win 21-14, 15-9 and push the lead to 2-0.
Shomock and Cutler put the match away with a straight-set win, surviving a tight opening set.
Floystad and Mcallister kept the pressure on, sweeping flight three 21-19, 21-17 for their second consecutive straight-set win.
The day concluded in the fifth flight with the score knotted at 1-1, but Morehead State forfeited due to an injury, giving EKU its second 5-0 sweep of the day.
EKU sits two wins away from tying the program record of 16 victories. The Colonels return to action Friday at the EKU Beach, hosting Liberty at 8 a.m.
