HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Boone Shevey and
Pedro Moreno combined for seven hits and eight RBIs to lead the Eastern Kentucky University baseball to a 16-6 victory at Northern Kentucky on Tuesday.
The Colonels will host Lipscomb for a 3-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m. ET. Friday will be the Military Appreciation Game. Those showing some form of military ID or wearing their EKU VETS gear will receive free admission. Military Appreciation t-shirts will be given away.
A 2-out, 2-run single through the right side off the bat of Shevey in the top of the second inning got the visitors on the board. Moreno added an RBI double later in the frame for a 3-0 lead.
With a 4-0 edge, and one out in the fourth inning,
David Alvarez hit a 3-run home run to push the margin to seven.
The Norse (20-23) got back in the game in the bottom of the fourth. After back-to-back doubles to start the inning, Ethan Thomas scored on a failed pickoff attempt. With two on and one out, Alex Brazer hit a home run over the wall in center to make it a 7-4 game. Jake Paulick and Marcus Harrison closed the gap to one, 7-6, with a pair of RBI singles.
The Colonels (11-34) answered NKU's 6-run inning with a 5-run fifth. Shevey drove in a run with a single through the right side. With the bases loaded, Moreno brought all three runners home with a double down the left field line.
Khaleel Pratt plated Moreno with a double to right center for a 12-6 advantage.
Moreno hit a solo home run in the seventh and finished the game 4-for-6 with three runs and five RBIs. Shevey went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs. Alvarez and Pratt also had 3-hit games.
Jack Briese started and held NKU scoreless for the first three innings. He allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out two. After the Norse scored six in the fourth inning, four Colonels held the home team without a run over the final five innings.
Clay Cartledge pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and
Cade Schneider pitched two scoreless innings.
Josh Williams had a 3-for-4 game for Northern Kentucky.
