RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University's baseball team closed to within one in the second inning, but Lipscomb pulled away for a 9-3 victory in the Atlantic Sun Conference series opener on Friday at Earle Combs Stadium.

A pair of unearned runs in the second staked Lipscomb (20-22, 13-9 ASUN) to a 3-0 lead but the Colonels came right back in the bottom half. An RBI single through the left side from
Jackson Cauthron got EKU on the board.Â
Boone Shevey's sacrifice bunt closed the margin to just one.

Jordan Thomas started the top of the third with a home run over the wall in right field to give the Bisons a 2-run margin, 4-2. Lipscomb pulled away with three in the fourth. One run scored on a hit batter with the bases loaded, and another scored on a wild pitch. Damion Kenealy Jr. added an RBI single to make it 7-2.

Cauthron hit a ninth inning solo home run and finished 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and two RBIs. Shevey went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Lipscomb starter Alexander Llinas limited the Colonels (11-35, 4-18 ASUN) to two runs on four hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out one. Hutson Miles had a 4-for-5 game with a walk, three runs and an RBI. Thomas drove in three while going 1-for-5 with a run scored.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPN+. Saturday will be Youth Sports Day and Senior Day. Kids 12 and under will receive FREE admission. There will be a postgame autograph session and a FREE baseball clinic. Food trucks and inflatables will also be at the stadium.
