Avery May scored the game-winner in the 84th minute as the Eastern Kentucky University women's soccer team defeated West Georgia 2-1 to improve to 2-0 in United Athletic Conference play.
With the score tied 1-1 late in the second half,
Peyton Smith pressured West Georgia on the left side of the box and sent the ball toward the middle. It deflected off
Chiara Premoli and fell to May, who drove a left-footed shot into the upper-right corner for the game-winner.
The winner was May's fourth goal of the season and came on her career-high 10th shot attempt of the match. She is tied for second in the UAC in goals and leads the conference in shots.
Smith continued her strong week for the Colonels, scoring the opening goal and adding an assist against West Georgia after netting twice in Thursday's win. Her three goals and seven points were both conference highs for the week.
Goalkeeper
Jordan LeVasseur anchored EKU's defense, recording four saves, with West Georgia's lone goal coming on a penalty kick. The victory was the 12th of her career, moving her into fourth place in program history for goalkeeper wins.
The win gave the Colonels (6-4-1, 2-0 UAC) six points from their opening two conference matches. EKU and North Alabama are the only UAC teams to start conference play 2-0.
Smith opened the scoring in the 24th minute after intercepting a pass near the West Georgia box. Finding May, who played the ball back to Smith for a right-footed finish into the bottom-left corner.
The Colonels carried a 1-0 lead into halftime after dictating the opening 45 minutes. EKU held 57% of possession and outshot West Georgia 17-2.
The Wolves pulled even in the 52nd minute as Kaylen Brown converted a penalty kick following an EKU foul in the box.
The match remained tied for the next 32 minutes before May found the net in the 84th to put the Colonels ahead for good.
EKU has a big week ahead as the Colonels travel to Florence to face North Alabama next Sunday. The Lions are the only team besides EKU to remain unbeaten in conference play, and the teams recorded draws in both meetings last season.
