Coretta Brown joined the Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball program as an assistant coach in July of 2021.

During the 2022-23 season, EKU finished 18-14 and 11-7 in ASUN play, its first winning season in over seven years. EKU would advance to the ASUN quarterfinals for the second consecutive season, falling to No. 4 Austin Peay on the road. Brown aided in the successful transition of over four transfers, including Antwainette Walker who improved her averages +16.3 in scoring and +6.4 in rebounding from her time in Marquette.

In Brown's first season at EKU, the Colonels successfully made the transition from the OVC to the ASUN, finishing the season with a 15-16 record and 7-9 mark in conference play. The Colonels would go on to advance to the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals in its first season in the conference. Brown aided in the development of senior guard Jayla Johnson, who averaged 12.7 points per game in her final year of collegiate basketball.

Brown came to EKU from Georgia Southern University where she was an assistant coach since the 2019-20 season. During her time at GSU she collaborated with the head coach on player development, recruitment, and discipline. Brown coached the guards and the offense while serving as the assistant recruiting coordinator, the director of basketball operations supervisor, equipment liaison, alumni relations contact and the camp coordinator.

Brown reviewed game film and provided statistical reports for game operations, developed new drills for training that covered dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, offense and rebounding techniques.

“I am thrilled that coach Brown will be joining our staff,” said head coach Greg Todd. “Coretta brings a wealth of experience to our staff. She will recruit, oversee our wing position group and be heavily involved in every aspect of our program. In addition to being an experienced coach, her playing background will be very valuable as well. Coach Brown’s experience as a first-round WNBA draft pick will be something our players benefit from.”

Brown was drafted 11th overall by the San Antonio Silver Stars in the 2003 WNBA Draft before getting traded to the Indiana Fever where she played for three seasons. She played her final two years with the Chicago Sky in their inaugural season. Brown traveled internationally during the WNBA off-season and competed in FIBA World Championship Tournament in Russia for team USA.

Before her time at Georgia Southern Brown was an assistant at the University of West Alabama from 2017 to 2019.  She managed all aspects of coaching, floor offense and defense and player development. She led the team recruiting program, identified prospects, coordinated home visits and evaluations, and tracked recruiting data. Brown developed scout plans for all games.  She also assisted with scheduling 30+ teams for all age group basketball camps/tournaments and provided financial management.

Brown launched a new program when she became the first head coach at Thomas University from 2012 to 2017. During her time at Thomas, she managed all aspects of the program from scheduling all practices and games, communicating with referees, and coordinating uniform and equipment procurement. Brown oversaw player development, managed assistant coaches, site management and facility maintenance, reviewed game and practice tapes, and developed game plans.

Brown coached four all-conference players, one freshman of the year, one academic all-conference, two Daktronic-NAIA Scholar Athletes and one honorable mention All-American.

She has had stops at Tennessee Tech (2009-12), Georgia High School Athletics Association (2008-09), Georgia Tech (2006-08) and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (2005-06).

Brown graduated from the University of North Carolina in 2003 where she received a bachelor of arts degree in African American Studies with a minor in English. She holds the UNC record in three-point shots made (251), which ranks third in ACC history.
