A household name in the Madison County area, Greg Todd was named the 10th head women’s basketball coach at Eastern Kentucky University on May 10, 2021.

Todd, who has spent his entire 34-year coaching career in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, has elevated the EKU women’s basketball program to new heights in just five seasons. He signed a two-year contract extension on May 30, 2024, that keeps him at the helm through the 2027-28 season.

Entering the 2026-27 season, Todd owns the highest winning percentage (.616) of any coach in program history, compiling a 101-63 record at EKU. He ranks third all-time in coaching victories and is one of three coaches in program history to reach 100 wins.

EKU enjoyed one of the best seasons in program history in 2025-26 under Todd, finishing with a 25-9 overall record and a 15-3 mark in ASUN Conference play. The Colonels recorded three consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in school history. Todd was named the 2026 ASUN Coach of the Year after guiding EKU to its first ASUN regular-season championship and 11th overall conference regular-season title. During the season, he recorded two win milestones with his 350th NCAA victory on Jan. 8 against North Alabama and 100th EKU victory on Feb. 27 against Bellarmine.

The Colonels earned an automatic bid to the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT) for the first time in program history and hosted No. 1 seed Utah at Baptist Health Arena. EKU defeated the Utes, 72-58, marking the program’s first national postseason tournament victory since 2002.

During the regular season, EKU secured key non-conference victories over Army, Morehead State, Evansville and North Dakota. In ASUN play, the Colonels posted 15 wins, completing season sweeps of Austin Peay, Lipscomb, North Alabama, Bellarmine, Queens and West Georgia to finish atop the league standings.

Todd’s squad also earned significant postseason recognition, with five student-athletes combining for 10 ASUN awards. Liz Freihofer was named First Team All-ASUN and ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Joseana Vaz earned First Team All-ASUN and ASUN Newcomer of the Year honors, Ndidiamaka Ndukwe was named ASUN Sixth Woman of the Year, and Kenleigh Woods was selected to the ASUN All-Freshman Team. It marked the first time since 1999 that EKU had two first-team all-conference selections.

As a team, EKU ranked among the NCAA’s top 50 in defensive rebounds, assists per game, 3-pointers per game and 3-point attempts per game, while spending more than half the season ranked inside the top 110 of the NET rankings. The Colonels climbed as high as No. 107, setting a program record in the NET era.

In 2024-25, Todd guided EKU to a 21-12 overall record and back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in more than 24 years. The Colonels advanced to the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals for the second straight season following a 77-60 home win over Stetson.

Todd developed three all-conference selections, including Alice Recanati (Second Team) and Kaitlyn Costner (Third Team), while freshman Liz Freihofer earned ASUN All-Freshman Team honors — EKU’s first since 2002. The Colonels secured non-conference wins over Southern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Indiana State, Northern Illinois and Samford, and went 10-8 in league play to earn the No. 4 seed in the ASUN Tournament, then the program’s highest finish as a league member.

Recanati finished her career as EKU’s all-time leader in assists, games played, games started and minutes played, and became the third player under Todd to sign a professional contract in Europe. EKU concluded the season ranked No. 172 in the NET.

During the 2023-24 campaign, EKU went 22-12 and earned a berth in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), marking the program’s first national postseason appearance since 2013. The Colonels reached the ASUN semifinals and recorded their first 20-win season since 2005.

Todd coached two all-conference selections in Antwainette Walker (First Team) and Recanati (Third Team), became the fastest coach in program history to reach 50 wins, and recorded his 300th career victory during the season. EKU spent more than 10 weeks receiving votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll and climbed as high as No. 162 in the NET rankings.

Since arriving in Richmond, Todd — known as “The Transfer Coach” — has brought in several high-profile transfers, including Antwainette Walker (Marquette), Kaitlyn Costner (Ohio State), Danielle Rainey (Florida), Ivy Turner (Northern Kentucky) and Joseana Vaz (Colorado State). He has signed 19 Division I transfers in five seasons, with multiple players going on to play professionally overseas.

In his second season in 2022-23, EKU posted an 18-14 overall record and an 11-7 mark in ASUN play, advancing to the conference quarterfinals for the second straight year. Todd was named the 2023 Herald-Leader Kentucky Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year, while Walker earned Herald-Leader Kentucky Player of the Year honors.

Walker also earned national recognition, landing on the Ann Meyers Drysdale Mid-Season Top 10 list and the Dawn Staley Late Season Watch List. She averaged 21.0 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, posted the largest scoring increase in the nation while leading the ASUN in more than 10 statistical categories.

In his first season at the helm in 2021-22, Todd led EKU to an impressive 15-16 overall record, including a 10-5 mark at home, and guided the Colonels to the ASUN Tournament quarterfinals after a first-round win at home over Kennesaw State.

Before arriving at EKU, Todd served as head coach at Morehead State University for seven seasons, leading the Eagles to three straight 20-win campaigns from 2016-19 and two WNIT appearances. His 2018-19 team advanced to the WNIT second round after upsetting Big Ten opponent Ohio State.

The Eagles’ success during that stretch marked the first time in program history with three consecutive 20-win seasons, while their 36 Ohio Valley Conference victories were the most over any three-year span.

Todd recruited two top-50 nationally ranked players at Morehead State — which still stand as the highest-rated recruits in program history — and coached teams that posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in each of his final six seasons.

From 2006-14, Todd was the head coach at Transylvania University, where he led the program to four conference championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a second-round finish in 2009.

Prior to his collegiate career, Todd built a national powerhouse at Lexington Catholic High School from 1999-2006, winning three state championships and making five state finals appearances. His teams finished ranked in the top 10 nationally in 2005 and 2006, including a No. 3 final ranking by USA Today in 2006 — the highest ever for a Kentucky high school program.

Todd was named EA Sports National Coach of the Year following the 2005-06 season and was inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. Since then, Todd has also been inducted into the Berea Community High School Athletics Hall of Fame, Lexington Catholic High School Athletics Hall of Fame, and Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Hall of Fame.

He began his head coaching career at his alma mater, Berea Community High School, compiling a 166-54 record over seven seasons and leading the program to a state semifinal appearance in 1998.
