EKU Volleyball Wins Ninth-Straight Match

Aldridge, Guard lead Eastern t

Richmond, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky volleyball team used a pair of big outings from senior Lesley Aldridge and junior Liz Guard to knock off Tennessee-Martin 3-0 on Saturday and push the team's win streak to a season-high nine matches.

Aldridge posted a match-high 17 kills and added 14 digs to pick up her team-leading 14th double-double of the year. Guard was second only to Aldridge in kills, finishing with 16 to go along with a match-high seven blocks (two solos, five assists). Guard's 16 kills pushed her career total over 900 as she draws ever closer to becoming the school's 11th member of the 1,000-kill club.

Eastern (17-3, 8-0 OVC) hit just .199 in the match but held the visiting Skyhawks to a .091 mark thanks in part to 10 total team blocks. UT Martin (7-10, 4-4 OVC) nearly forced a fourth game, but the Colonels pulled out a 30-28 decision to clinch the sweep.

Eastern went on top 10-4 in game one after Aldridge and sophomore Kasha Brozek teamed up on a block. The Skyhawks kept it close, trailing by five (20-15) following another block by Brozek and Guard, but could not avoid dropping the first game 30-24. Guard led the Eastern Kentucky attack with eight kills over the course of game one.

UTM took charge at the start of game two and built a quick 7-4 advantage. The Colonels fought back to tie the game at 8-all, then went ahead 10-8 after back-to-back aces by freshman Brittany Nobilio. It was all EKU from there as the Colonels pushed their lead to 20-12 and never looked back, taking an eventual 30-19 victory after holding their opponents to a .041 hitting percentage.

The Skyhawks were again the aggressors in game three, playing to a 10-6 lead before EKU rallied to tie the game at 12-all. Eastern went ahead 15-12, thanks in part to two aces from freshman Mallory Eikenberry, but UTM quickly evened the bout at 17-all. The Colonels seemed to take control of the contest after going ahead 25-20, but UT Martin responded with six unanswered points to take a 26-25 lead. Despite having the momentum on their side, the Skyhawks were unable to prevail as three hitting errors sealed their fate and led to Eastern's 30-28 win.

Nobilio led all players with 18 kills, while sophomore Jessica Sabath contributed 12 to the Colonels' 67-dig total. UTM was led by Kathryn Sprague, who posted eight kills (.467 hitting percentage) and five blocks in the losing effort.

The Colonels return to action this Wednesday when they welcome Morehead State to McBrayer Arena at 7 p.m.
