Richmond, Ky. – A solid defensive effort allowed the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team to push its win streak to 10 matches with a 3-0 win over Morehead State on Wednesday night.
The Colonels (18-3, 9-0 OVC) remained undefeated in league play by limiting the visiting Eagles (7-14, 6-3 OVC) to a .007 hitting percentage after tallying 11 total team blocks. The EKU offense hit .343 as a team including marks of .444 and .476 over the first two games.
Senior
Lesley Aldridge led all players with 12 kills, allowing her to move past Lori Federmann (1,197 career kills) for seventh place on Eastern's all-time kills list. Aldridge was the only Colonel to reach double figures in kills in the match, but was followed closely by junior
Liz Guard's nine-kill, five-block effort.
Eastern jumped out to a 10-4 advantage in game one and enjoyed a 20-13 lead after a solo block by sophomore
Kasha Brozek. The Colonels tallied 17 kills en route to their 30-19 game-one win, receiving six kills a piece from Aldridge and freshman
Amy Arlinghaus. Sophomore
Denise Grundhoefer chipped in a pair of block solos in game one.
A kill by Guard put the Colonels ahead 8-1 in the early goings of game two, giving EKU more than enough cushion to take an eventual 30-13 victory. The Eagles hit a negative-.065 in the game after tallying 11 errors and just nine kills.
Morehead built an 8-4 lead from the onset of game three, but hitting errors once again plagued the Eagle offense, as two-straight miscues allowed Eastern to tie the match at 9-all. EKU took its first lead of the game at 11-10 then built its advantage to six points (19-13) after a kill by Guard. The Eagles never recovered, suffering a 30-21 defeat despite holding Eastern to a .190 hitting percentage (its lowest of the match).
Freshman
Brittany Nobilio led all players with 19 kills, followed by 11 from sophomore
Jessica Sabath. Brozek and Grundhoefer aided the front line's effort with three blocks apiece.
Morehead State tallied 36 kills and 35 errors over the course of the three-game match (135 swings). Laura Cox led the Eagles with 11 kills, while Johanna Thompson paced the squad with 11 digs.
The Colonels return to action this weekend when they hit the road to take on Tennessee State (Oct. 22) and Belmont (Oct. 23).
