Colonel Volleyball's 13-Match Win Streak Comes To An End

EKU suffers first loss since S

Jacksonville, Ala. – The Eastern Kentucky volleyball team saw its 13-match win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon at the hands of Jacksonville State, who handed EKU its first Ohio Valley Conference loss of the year by limiting its opponent to a .143 hitting percentage.

Having seen their 11-match win streak come to an end at the hands of Eastern back on Oct. 8, the Gamecocks returned the favor by defeating the Colonels, 3-1, thanks in part to a match-high 20 kills from Shari Weyer.

Eastern (21-4, 11-1) had not lost a match in more than a month, with the beginning of its 13-consecutive victories dating back to Sept. 18, as the Colonels rebounded from a 3-2 loss to Memphis by defeating Louisiana Tech, 3-0.

The Gamecocks (18-6, 8-4 OVC) hit .240 in the match and tallied 10 total team blocks. JSU had four players reach double digits in kills in the win, and received a 15-kill, seven-block effort from Abbey Breit.

EKU struggled offensively throughout the course of the match and dropped a 30-22 decision in game one after hitting just .075 as a team. The Colonels rallied to take the second game, 30-28, but hit under .120 in both of the final two games to hand JSU the win.

Junior Liz Guard led Eastern with a 14-kill effort, followed by 10 kills from senior Lesley Aldridge. Sophomore Kelly Jennings tallied five kills, 38 assists and 15 digs in the losing effort, while sophomore Kasha Brozek chipped in a team-high six blocks (four solos).

The Colonels will look to rebound next weekend when they welcome Southeast Missouri (Nov. 5) and first-place Eastern Illinois (Nov. 6) to McBrayer Arena.
