Richmond, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky volleyball team put an end to the Ohio Valley Conference's longest winning streak on Friday night, snapping Jacksonville State's 11-match run with a 3-0 victory.
EKU (14-3, 5-0 OVC) picked up its sixth-straight win (all by sweep) while handing the visiting Gamecocks their first conference loss of the season in the process. JSU (13-3, 4-1 OVC) was outhit .208 to .256 by the Colonels, who rode a match-high 16 kills from senior
Lesley Aldridge to the win.
Aldridge registered her team-high 12th double-double of the year by adding 15 digs to her kill total. Eastern's co-captain, who hit .400 in the match, upped her career dig total to 1,320 to overtake Sue Antkowiak (1,311) for third place on the school's all-time list.
The two teams went back and forth over the course of game one, battling to a 28-all standstill. JSU went ahead 29-28 to force game point but a kill by sophomore
Jessica Sabath brought Eastern back from the brink. Consecutive kills from junior
Liz Guard proved the difference down the stretch, allowing EKU to pull out a hard-fought 31-29 victory.
After taking game two by a score of 30-25, the Colonels found themselves facing a 10-4 deficit through the early goings of game three. But Eastern recovered to bring the game to 15-15 at the midway point and took a 22-19 lead after consecutive aces by sophomore
Kelly Jennings. A kill by Guard brought the contest to match point before a JSU hitting error completed the sweep.
JSU took the loss despite tallying more kills than the Colonels (49 to 48). Aldridge led all players and was followed by Guard and freshman
Amy Arlinghaus with 12 and 11, respectively. Freshman
Brittany Nobilio paced the defense with a match-high 17 digs, while junior
Libby Schleisman chipped in 11 digs.
Jennings dished out 43 assists in the win, allowing her to move past Emily Leath (2,207) for second place on EKU's all-time assists list. The Colonels tallied nine total team blocks, led by a match-high five digs from sophomore
Kasha Brozek. Guard and sophomore
Denise Grundhoefer did their part by chipping in four blocks a piece.
The Colonels return to action Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. match against Samford.
