RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky Colonel basketball team got off to its first 2-0 start since the 2002-03 campaign with a 102-47 win over visiting Webster, highlighted by Michael Haney's 15-point, nine rebound performance.
Haney led a contingency of five Colonels in double figures. All 13 active players saw action in the contest with 13 finding their way into the scoring column.
Head coach Travis Ford said, "We did a good job defending them. We knew that we had to guard them well on the perimeter, and I thought we did a good job of that."
The Colonels started off quickly, running out to a 11-0 lead with less than five minutes gone from the clock. Matt Witt, and Zach Ingles hit threes to put the Colonels up 9-0, and Jason McLeish finished the run with a layup.
The Gorloks finally got on the board with a trey from Kaniela Aiona with 15:15 left in the opening frame, but the Colonels put together a 9-0 run capped by another Witt trey that put the Colonels up 20-3 with 12:36 to play in the first half.
EKU would run its lead to 27 by the halftime buzzer and never looked back.
The Colonels displayed their spurtability again in the opening minutes of the second half, reeling off a 10-0 run to start the final stanza, accented by Haney's six points during the stretch.
The Colonels lead hovered in the mid-40s for most of the remainder of the game, but EKU closed the game with yet another big run – this one equaling 15-2 to put the icing on the cake for the 55-point win.
Haney's tally led the Colonels in both scoring and rebounding, while Matt Witt scored 14 points. Julian Mascoll netted 12, Zach Ingles scored 11, and Alonzo Hird had 10.
"We knew we couldn't come out and have a letdown because we won a game on Sunday that most people probably didn't expect us to win," Witt said. "We ran our offense and executed well tonight which is what we wanted to do in this game."
The Colonels also dominated on the glass, grabbing 50 boards in the game and outrebounding the Gorloks by 23.
Aiona led Webster with 22 points, while Marshall Newman led his team in rebounding with five.
The Colonels will take a short break for the Thanksgiving holiday, before returning to action in McBrayer Arena on Saturday night against Mt. St. Joseph. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
