Murray, Ky. - The Eastern Kentucky volleyball team posted a season-best .417 hitting percentage, fueled by a career-high .609 mark from junior
Liz Guard, to cruise to a 3-0 win over Murray State on Saturday.
The Colonels (11-3, 2-0 OVC) held their opponents to a meager .080 hitting percentage and allowed just 49 points in the match, thanks in part to a 30-5 victory in game two. Eastern hit a season-best .645 in the second game (20 kills and no errors on 31 attempts), while holding the Racers (3-5, 0-2 OVC) to a negative-.125 percentage.
Guard tallied 15 kills in the win and came up with a season-high six block assists. Senior
Lesley Aldridge hit .467 for the match en route to a match-high 16 kills. Her 16 kills moved Aldridge into a tie with Courtney Bowen for ninth place on the school's all-time list with 1,092 career kills.
Sophomore setter
Kelly Jennings did a little bit of everything for the Colonels, posting five kills, 45 assists, nine digs and three blocks in the win. Her 45 assists increased her career total to 2,088 assists, moving her into fourth place on EKU's all-time list past Michelle Saldubehere (2,069 assists).
Freshman
Brittany Nobilio and sophomore
Jessica Sabath led the Colonels with 10 digs a piece, while MSU's Julie Lashley paced all players with 11 digs. Katie Kemezys was the lone bright spot for the Racer offense, as the sophomore middle blocker tallied 13 kills off a .355 hitting percentage.
EKU's frontline came up with nine total team blocks in the win, including three from sophomore
Denise Grundhoefer and two a piece from sophomore
Kasha Brozek and freshman
Amy Arlinghaus.
The Colonels return to action next weekend with conference matches at Austin Peay (Oct. 1) and Tennessee Tech (Oct. 2).
