JACKSONVILLE, Al. -- Jacksonville State's Gamecocks hit 49.0 percent from the field and placed five men in double figures in defeating the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, 70-55, Saturday night in JSU's Mathews Coliseum.
"We did nothing on our end to win the game," said a disappointed EKU head coach Travis Ford. "We couldn't shoot the ball, we didn't defend and we didn't rebound.
"I think our bad shooting carried over to the other end, and we didn't do a good job on the boards like we usually do and we didn't defend anybody.
"Jacksonville State jumped on us from the beginning to the end. I am really disappointed about our effort.
"Our engine never got started. We never made a run. We've got to shake it off, move on and get over it."
Jacksonville State ran out to a 33-18 lead at the break, as the Gamecocks (7-18 overall, 2-10 in the OVC) hit 50 percent from the field, while the Colonels managed to only hit 25 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of action.
Eastern made one run, cutting the margin to seven at 38-31 with 13:27 to go, but JSU scored the next eight points to balloon the margin back out to 15 at 46-31 with 11:27 left. The lead never got under 10 points after that.
Michael Haney led the Colonels with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Zach Ingles added 12 points. The Colonels finished the game, hitting 34.5 percent from the field and were outrebounded 41-29. Hird led Eastern with nine boards.
Walker D. Russell led JSU with 16 points, followed by Anthony Wilson with 14, Tim Lewis and Carlos Lumpkin with 12 each and Brandon Davis with 10.
JSU finished the game hitting 49 percent from the field. Substitute guard B.J. Spencer picked up 10 rebounds for the Gamecocks.
Eastern, now 15-8 overall and in a fifth-place tie in the OVC at 7-5, hosts Southeast Missouri Thursday night (Feb. 17) at 7:30 p.m. EST.
