JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Junior Brittany Nobilio registered a game-high 41 digs and sophomore Bridget Mustard recorded a team-high 14 kills but it was not enough as the fourth seeded Eastern Kentucky volleyball team was eliminated from the Ohio Valley Conference tournament with a 3-2 (30-28, 26-30, 30-26, 25-30, 15-10) loss to fifth seeded Morehead State on Thursday night. With the loss Eastern finishes the season with a record of 17-14 while the Eagles improve to 21-12.
Morehead State came out firing in the first game, totaling 25 kills and a .310 hitting percentage to take the first game 30-28.
Eastern Kentucky took an early 13-8 lead in game two, but the Eagles battled back to tie the game at 20. However, a key block and kill late in the game by Mustard helped secure the game at 30-26 and tie the match.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the third game, but Eastern Kentucky continued to battle back, eventually taking the lead at 20-19. From there, the Eagles would go on a 11-6 run to close the game at 30-26.
Eastern Kentucky answered in the fourth, jumping out to an early 10-5 lead, but a 6-1 surge by Morehead State tied the game. Both teams would trade the lead during the middle portion of the game. With the score knotted at 19, EKU pulled away with a 11-6 run to stave off elimination with a 30-25 win.
The Eagles exploded out of the gate in the fifth game, stretching out to an 10-3 lead before the
Colonels rallied and pulled within 10-6. In the end, Cox and Peak would take control and give the Eagles the win.
Sophomore Erin Peak had a match-high 28 kills to lead the way for Morehead State, followed by Laura Cox's 20.
Morehead State advances to the semi-finals where it will face top-seeded Jacksonville State Friday night at 6:00 p.m. Central
