Western Kentucky Uses Three-Point Shot to Defeat EKU, 78-55

Freshman Adam Leonard
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Host Western Kentucky hit 15 three-pointers on its way to a 78-55 victory over the Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball team Saturday night in E.A. Diddle Arena. The Hilltoppers (7-1) have now won 11 consecutive Battle of the Bluegrass tilts over the Colonels (5-2).

Six WKU players connected on a three-pointer including Courtney Lee, who was a perfect 5-for-5 from long range and led all scorers with 22 points. Ty Rogers came off the bench and made five three-pointers as well to finish with 15 points while Benson Callier added 12.

For Eastern, freshman Adam Leonard netted 6-of-10 (60 percent) shots for a personal-best 15 points. Meanwhile, junior Jamaal Douglas recorded eight points, a game-high seven rebounds and a career-best three blocked shots.

A jumper by Douglas followed by fast-break points by senior Julian Mascoll and sophomore Mike Rose put the Colonels ahead early, 6-2. However, Western took the lead for good after Lee and Rogers netted three-pointers to make the score, 15-12, with 13:46 left in the first half. One of Leonard's three trifectas cut the EKU deficit to one, 26-25, but the Hilltoppers closed the half on a 12-2 spurt and took a 38-27 advantage into the break.

Ten of Western's 13 field goals in the opening 20 minutes were three-pointers. The Hilltoppers shot 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from behind the arc while the Colonels were only 3-of-10 (30 percent).

Eastern Kentucky regrouped at the start of the second stanza and used a pair of three-pointers from Leonard and Mascoll to creep to within five, 38-33. Douglas came away with a steal on Western's next possession, but EKU missed a chance to slice into the deficit again when Rose just missed a fast-break lay-up. From there, the Hilltoppers scored the next eight points to rebuild a double-digit lead, 46-33, and were not challenged the rest of the way.

Western connected on 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) of its three-point attempts in the contest. The Colonels had made 48.1 percent (25-of-52) of their long range jumpers the last two games, but were held to just 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) shooting from beyond the arc.

Eastern Kentucky next opens OVC action at home on Thursday, Dec. 7, against defending league champion Murray State. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
