BRADENTON, Fla. – Junior Charlie Yarbrough had a hit and two RBI but it was not enough as the Connecticut Huskies used a five-run fifth inning to defeat the Eastern Kentucky baseball team 5-4 today. The Colonels fall to 5-5 with the loss while UConn improves to 7-5.
Eastern jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first with the help of two Connecticut errors. Senior Brett Bolger walked with one out, stole second and then scored when UConn right fielder Ted Garry misplayed junior Tyler Nix's single. Yarbrough then smacked an RBI single to drive in Nix and give EKU a 2-0 lead.
The Colonels scored another unearned run in the third when sophomore Lucas Waters scored on an error by Connecticut third baseman Pat Mahoney.
But the Huskies stormed back with five in the fifth highlighted by a two-out two-run double from Larry Day to give UConn the 5-3 lead.
EKU closed to 5-4 in the ninth on an RBI groundout from senior Keith Bolger but UConn closer Eric Turgeon struck out sophomore Clint Seymour to end the game.
Sophomore Alex Napier pitched four scoreless innings in relief of starter Nick Barte.
The Colonels are back in action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in Bradenton, Fla. against St. Francis (NY).
