UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Junior Amy Arlinghaus' game-high 18 kills weren't enough today in the Eastern Kentucky volleyball team's 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-18) loss to Duke this afternoon in the fourth game of the Penn State Invitational. The Blue Devils, who received votes in the AVCA'a preseason poll, stay undefeated with a 5-0 record while the Colonels drop to 1-4.
Arlinghaus ended the match with a .316 hitting percentage with 38 attempts and just six errors. Four Colonels recorded double-figures in the dig column as seniors Kelly Jennings and Jessica Sabath and junior Brittany Nobilio each registered 11 and freshman Liza Kelly added 10.
In the first game, the Colonels scored the first point of the contest and took a four-point advantage (10-6) following a Duke attack error. The Blue Devils rattled off four unanswered to knot the score at 10 and after five more tie scores, the Colonels pulled ahead 21-19 after an attack error from Duke. With the score tied at 21, 22, 23 and 26, Duke scored four of the last five points to earn the 30-27 win.
In game two, Eastern Kentucky again scored the first point and retook the lead at 18-17 with a Duke service error. The Colonels held their largest advantage at 23-20 with back-to-back kills from Arlinghaus and senior Kasha Brozek. After the Blue Devils regained control of the game, a Jennings' kill evened the score at 28 but Duke closed out the contest off a kill and Colonel attack error.
Game three stayed close throughout the beginning before Duke scored five consecutive to go ahead 13-8. The Colonels twice got within three points but the Blue Devils captured the match with the 12-point win.
Eastern Kentucky faces West Virginia at 4 p.m. in its final match of the Penn State Invitational.
