Colonels Cruise to 94-57 Victory Over UT Martin

Freshman Adam Leonard
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball team shot 71.4 percent from the field in the first half and built a 26-point cushion at intermission on its way to a 94-57 win over UT Martin Monday night in McBrayer Arena. With the win, the Colonels (11-9, 6-6 OVC) complete the season sweep over the Skyhawks (6-18, 4-10).

Six players finished in double figures for Eastern led by freshman Adam Leonard's 18 tallies. Sophomore Mike Rose added 17 points on 75 percent shooting from behind the arc while junior Jamaal Douglas and freshman Josh Taylor came off the bench to combine for 22 points.

Tennessee-Martin's Gerald Robinson notched team highs in both points (14) and rebounds (eight). Meanwhile, McKale Jones netted 11 points to go along with eight boards.

There were three ties and four lead changes in the early goings after Zerek Knight's jumper put the Skyhawks ahead, 11-10. From there, the Colonels put together a 25-3 run over the next seven minutes to build a sizable 35-14 advantage. Eastern converted 10-of-11 (90.9 percent) field goal attempts during that critical stretch. Senior Julian Mascoll's dunk with 1:21 remaining pushed the EKU margin to 27 points, 46-19, before the Colonels settled on a 48-22 lead at the break.

UT Martin twice cut the deficit to 21 early in the second half, but each time Eastern Kentucky responded with some points of its own to quell any thoughts of a Skyhawk comeback. The Colonels finished the game shooting a season-high 64.4 percent (38-of-59) from the field and all nine EKU players tallied at least one bucket.

The 94 points scored and 25 turnovers forced by the Colonels are the most under second-year head coach Jeff Neubauer.

Eastern Kentucky returns to action this Thursday, Feb. 1, at OVC rival Morehead State. The game will be televised locally on WYMT-57 beginning at 8 p.m.
